In a regular season basketball game, there are 4 quarters that last a total of 48 minutes. Each quarter is 12 minutes. The teams get 2 timeouts per quarter and a one minute halftime.
In the playoffs, basketball games have 4 quarters and last a total of 60 minutes. Each quarter is 15 minutes and the teams get 3 timeouts per quarter and a two minute halftime.
If the teams are tied after regulation, they move into overtime. Overtime lasts five minutes and the teams get one timeout each.
Injuries and Timeouts
There are additional stoppages of play that can increase the duration of a basketball game. Injuries and timeouts can add minutes to the overall game time.
