The Army Navy Football Game: A Long-Standing Tradition of American Athletics
For 121 consecutive years, the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis have put their rivalry and competitive spirit to the test on the football field in the annual Army Navy Football Game. Regarded as one of the most prolific and exciting regular season sporting events in the United States, the Army Navy Football Game has become an American tradition unlike any other.
History of the Game
The Army Navy Football Game has been held annually since 1890. The early years of the game saw the Navy come out on top, as they won 25 out of the first 40 matchups. Over the course of its 121 year history, the game has seen some unforgettable moments. In the first half of the 20th century, Army became the dominant force, winning 22 to the Navy’s six wins during the height of World War II. In recent years, the Navy has returned to its winning ways, winning thirteen of the last fourteen matchups.
The Epic Battle
The Army Navy Football Game has become a pillar of American athletics, recognized around the country for its energy, competition, and loyal fanbase. Each year, the game is held at a neutral location, and in recent memory the games have been held at Fedex Field, MetLife Field, and Lincoln Financial Field. Supporters of each team can be seen throughout the stadium, with a sea of Army Black and Navy Blue engulfing the stadium. Those in attendance celebrate the competition and rivalry between the two teams, recognizing the value of military service and the many brave men and women who have served our country.
When is the Game?
The most exciting event of the year for each respective institution is typically held in mid December of each year. This year in 2020, the Army Navy Football Game will be held on December 12th at 3PM ET. Both teams are expected to bring strong squads to the field, as they look to make one last push for a victory and bragging rights until the teams meet again in 2021.
The Battle for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy
In addition to the Army Navy Football Game, the two academies also battle annually for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy. This trophy is a collegiate football prize that is awarded to the team with the best regular season record among the three service academy teams (USMA, USNA, and the United States Air Force Academy). The trophy is not just a symbol of athletic excellence, rather it is a sign of commitment and a reminder of our country’s persistent battle for freedom.
The Army Navy Football Game is not just a game, it is a message of camaraderie and respect for our military. It is a reminder that our military stands behind unifying ideals and that we should never forget the courage and humility of our servicemen and women.
